Known by many of us as one of the most iconic people in the local metal scene, Noel Mifsud will be our official DJ for Friday the 13th after party. Prepare those mosh pits, it will be a guaranteed night of head banging and pure craziness.
With key figures Noel Mallia, Joe Tanti and Albert Zammit being part of his major influences, Noel will be playing a mix of today’s metal with the traditional sound that helped build the story of our lives … We all know what that means. Anyone around here that remembers the good old days knows what we should expect …
But … what do we really know about Noel Mifsud?
As far as I can remember, I was always listening to music. We always had the radio on at home and I remember listening to it before and after school. I also remember listening to Rock File presented by Noel Mallia, and today it is an honour to work with him.
I started presenting on radio in the early 90’s on Super 1 (ONE Radio today). Come mid 90’s, I moved from radio to rock clubs, with the longest stint being the Harlequin Rock club in Paceville. When my eldest was born, I went into semi-retirement, where although, still ever present in the Maltese bands’ live scene, I put away my headphones, only to bring them back out in 2009. Joe Tanti asked Marc Tanti and I to co host the rebirth of his show Rock Moods on ONE Radio. Joe and Marc left the show in my hands some months later and till summer 2011 Lito co hosted the show with me. Today, Rock Moods is solely hosted by me every Monday. A show featuring everything that falls under the rock umbrella (especially the local scene) without any discriminations. Musicians who guested on the show are many but the most memorable must have been Deborah Bonham, Andy Barnett (FM) and Tino Troy (Praying Mantis), Greg Mackintosh (Paradise Lost), Peter Svensson and Erica Welberg (Void Moon). In the meantime, in March 2011, I also commenced to present Heatstrokes, a metal show on Allrock every Sunday with repeats on Monday and Friday. As I see no need to put tags on music, I play from all aspects of metal. During these past two years, apart from the numerous local artists to feature on both shows, I am happy to have had Luce (Hooded Priest), Kory Clarke (Warrior Soul), Abbath amongst others.
I am also the co founder of a group named Prog the Islands (https://www.facebook.com/progtheislands), a group aiming to help Maltese artists by organizing events and merchandise distribution. Also in my curriculum I must add the management of Colourblind, officially since 2011. Since 2012, I have also been a member of the organizing committee of the Malta Doom Festival.
Noel was quite astonished when asked what were his thoughts with regards to being described as one of the key figures in the local metal scene. He admits that he’s part of a dying breed but for him a DJ plays what music is around, although there is more than one way of playing it, the merit goes out to the musicians who work very hand to support the scene. For Noel, it’s an honour and a pleasure to play it out loud and support the bands.
Friday the 13th is turning out to be an event with a killer line up.
See you at Razzett l-Ahmar.
